Scientific Papers

Carrasco Rivera & Wenger, Ocean and Coastal Management, 2026

Wastewater pollution undermines coastal marine protection

Peer-reviewed confirmation that nitrogen pollution inside Coral Triangle MPAs is significantly higher than in surrounding unprotected waters. Consistent with water quality data PEP and BLUD are collecting in Raja Ampat.

Donovan et al., PNAS, 2020

Nitrogen pollution interacts with heat stress to increase coral bleaching

Demonstrates that local nitrogen pollution lowers the temperature threshold at which corals bleach and doubles bleaching severity. Directly relevant to the Dampier Strait.

Umezawa et al., Coral Reefs, 2002

Groundwater nitrogen discharge into coral reefs

Shows how nitrogen moves through porous limestone geology directly into nearshore reef waters — the mechanism that makes Raja Ampat's karst geology a critical factor.

Szmant, Estuaries, 2002

Nutrient enrichment on coral reefs: is it a major cause of coral reef decline?

Foundational review of how nutrient enrichment drives algae dominance and coral decline. Provides the scientific basis for treating wastewater before it reaches the reef.

Vega Thurber et al., Global Change Biology, 2013

Chronic nutrient enrichment increases prevalence and severity of coral disease and bleaching

Links sustained nutrient loading to increased disease and bleaching susceptibility. Supports the case for continuous wastewater management, not one-off interventions.

Local Evidence

BLUD UPTD Pengelolaan Kawasan Konservasi Raja Ampat — Water Quality Report 2025

Faecal coliform counts at Arborek main jetty: 1,234 per 100ml. West Arborek: 875 per 100ml. Manta Sandy: 208 per 100ml. Indonesia's legal limit is 200 per 100ml. Two of three sites exceed the legal limit.

Kajian Kualitas Air dan Pemutihan Karang, Dampier Strait, May 2025

Bleaching survey and water quality assessment conducted in the Dampier Strait. Documents current reef condition and nutrient loading at active PEP monitoring sites.

TropWater JCU Expert Consultation, 2024

Expert findings from James Cook University's TropWater centre on nutrient loading in the Dampier Strait. Provides independent scientific assessment of nitrogen sources and reef impact.

PEP Technical Documents

ReefSaver System Specification

Full technical specification for the three-stage ReefSaver wastewater treatment system: Penguin bioseptic tank (primary), two-chamber fiberglass treatment tank with pumice stone media and PVC pipe manifold (secondary), vetiver grass wetland bed (tertiary). Available on request.

LAMPT AIS System Specification

Technical documentation for the LAMPT Liveaboard Monitoring and Positioning Tracking system. Covers AIS integration, discharge zone mapping, compliance certification, and PERBUP Raja Ampat No. 30 Tahun 2021 regulatory framework. Available on request.

Bioseptic Nutrient Risk Summary

Assessment of residual nutrient risk from bioseptic-only treatment systems in the Dampier Strait context. Explains why secondary-only treatment is insufficient for reef protection and why tertiary treatment is required. Available on request.
